No. 18 WSU Volleyball Upset by California in Berkeley

Box Score BERKELEY, Calif. -- Kyra Holt tallied another double-double but it was not enough as the No. 18 Washington State volleyball team (17-7 overall, 7-5 Pac-12) was upset in three sets at California (9-13, 3-9) Saturday night at Haas Pavilion with set scores of 25-23, 25-17, and 25-22.

Holt, a senior from nearby Hercules, Calif., led the Cougars with 12 kills and 11 digs for her 46th double-double of her WSU career. McKenna Woodford had nine kills, hitting .333, and Hailey Bethune added six kills, hitting .308. Claire Martin led the team with six blocks, followed by Casey Schoenlein and Taylor Mims with four blocks each. Bethune added three blocks while Holt and Woodford contributed two blocks each. Nicole Rigoni and Haley MacDonald combined for 35 assists.

Cal's Christine Alftin had 11 kills to lead the Golden Bears. Jenelle Jordan, who was injured and did not play in the earlier WSU win over the Bears match in Pullman, led the match with seven blocks and added eight kills with a .438 hitting percentage. Maddy Kerr had 13 digs while Alyssa Jensen set up 36 assists.

WSU hit .113 for the match while Cal hit .136. Cougars won the blocking battle 11 to eight. Cal tallied 38 kills to WSU's 37 and the home court Bears out-dug WSU 42 to 35. Cal landed two aces but WSU went without an ace.

"We had way too many errors against a not really great blocking team. We hit a lot of balls out-of-bounds and that's a mentality problem: we have to be more aggressive. I thought we passed pretty well but definitely made too many errors. Cal did a nice job of digging, being aggressive and we didn't match that," Cougar Head Coach Jen Greeny said. "It's tough playing back-to-back nights but they did the same as us so there's really no excuses for nine service errors and 25 hitting errors. It doesn't get any easier. Second half of the season, especially in the Pac-12, we have to be able to make adjustments and I don't think we're doing that right now very well."

WSU returns home to play in Bohler Gym next weekend, taking on Oregon State (8-14, 1-10 pending 10/30 match vs. Arizona) Friday, Nov. 4 at 7 p.m., and No. 20 Oregon (14-6, 7-5 pending 10/30 match vs. Arizona State) Sunday, Nov. 6 at 11 a.m.
