PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's tennis team had an impressive first day at the 2016 Cougar Classic Friday at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
In the doubles flight, WSU's Victoria Matejevic and Melisa Ates began play with a convincing victory over the Lewis-Clark State pair of Kianna Arthur and Lauren Lang, 6-2. Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska continued the Cougars strong showing by defeating Montana State's Shelby Cerkovnik and Wanda Holopainen, 6-3. Cougar teammates Lejla Colic and Ege Tomey posted a first-round victory over Montana's Stanzi Stuijt and Lidia Dukic, 7-5. The three Cougars' doubles teams advanced to the quarterfinals.
Washington State dominated in the crimson singles flight as Matejevic, Michalkova and Miksovska all swept their respective opponents during the first round of play. Michalkova cruised to the semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Lewis-Clark State's Stephanie Buckingham and a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Montana's Lidia Dukic. Miksovska defeated Nathalie Joanlanne of Montana, 6-2, 6-0 and advanced to the semifinals with a 6-1, 0-6, 6-4 win over Boise State's Nancy Menjivar. Matejevic defeated Lewis-Clark State's Laura Roselli, 6-0, 6-0 and then fell to Boise State's Hanna Kantenwein 6-3, 7-6 in the quarterfinals.
In the gray singles flight, WSU newcomers Ates, Colic and Tomey impressed during their first Cougar Classic. Ates posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Boise State's Kristy Venter and a 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 effort over Montana's Ana Carbo. Colic bested Kianna Arthur of Lewis-Clark State, 6-1, 6-1, and defeated Montana State's Wanda Holopainen, 6-3, 6-2 during the second round. Tomey defeated Montana's Shelby Cerkovnik 6-2, 6-3, and posted a hard-fought 7-5, 6-7, 6-3 win over Milena Toseva of Boise State.
The Cougars continue play Saturday at the Cougar Classic with matches starting at 10 a.m. at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
