OJAI, Calif. – Washington State's freshmen duo of Aneta Miksovska and Barbora Michalkova advanced to the semifinals of the Doubles Invitational Flight at the Pac-12 Championships at Ojai Valley Tennis Center, Friday afternoon.
In the opening round of the Doubles Invitational Flight, Miksovska and Michalkova bested Alexandra Aiello and Kyra Wojcik of Colorado, 6-3. The WSU freshmen pair then advanced to the semifinal round by walkover. Miksovska and Michalkova take on Arizona State's Samantha Hampton and Kassidy Jump, ranked No. 88 nationally and the Invitational Flight's No. 2-seed, in the semifinal round Saturday morning.
In the Doubles Championship Flight, Trang Huynh and Victoria Matejevic opened the day for the Cougars by posting an impressive 6-3 win over Oregon's Nia Rose and Alyssa Tobita, ranked No. 81 nationally. Huynh and Matejevic then competed against the nation's No. 7-ranked doubles pair and the Doubles Championship Flight's No. 4-seed, Giuliana Olmos and Gabby Smith of USC. The WSU duo was unable to maintain their momentum falling to Olmos and Smith, 6-1.
After doubles play, WSU competed in consolation singles matches.
Miksovska got the Cougars off on the right track dominating Stanford's Lindsey Kostas in straight-sets, 6-0, 6-0. The win marks Miksovska's 30th victory of the season, which moves her into a tie for fifth on the WSU single-season singles wins list, joining current teammate Maria Biryukova.
WSU's Matejevic defeated Colorado's Wojcik in a hard-fought 6-2, 7-6 (4) victory, while Huynh took down Victoria Robertson of Utah 7-5, 7-6 (4). With the win, Huynh moves into a tie for third on the WSU single-season singles wins list with 32 victories. She sits even with current teammate Donika Bashota (2015) and Elisabeth Fournier (2010) on the list.
Michalkova squared off against Jenna Cheng of Utah, but was topped 6-1, 6-0, while Miskovska fell 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-4) in her second consolation match of the day to Devin Chypyha of Arizona.
The Cougars return to the court Saturday with first serve of doubles play scheduled for 9 a.m.
