PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State captured five of six singles matches en route to its second-straight conference win as the No. 58 Cougars defeated Colorado, 6-1, Sunday morning at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts.
With the win the Cougars improve to 16-4 on the season, 2-3 in Pac-12 play. Colorado falls to 6-9 over, 1-3 in conference.
In doubles play, the Cougars came out quick, winning the first two matches to clinch the opening point. At No. 2 Donika Bashota and Lize Leenknecht rode an early break to a 6-3 victory over Nuria Ormeno Ruiz and Alex Aiello, while Maria Biryukova and Trang Huynh quickly followed with a 6-3 win over Jeannez Daniel and Annabelle Andrinopoulos at No. 1. The third match was suspended with WSU's Barbora Michalkova and Aneta Miksovska leading 5-3 over Brigitte Beck and Kyra Wojcik.
In singles play, Leenknecht made it 2-0 as after trailing 2-1 in the first, won the next four games en route to a 6-2, 6-3 win over Beck at No. 6. Miksovska brought the Cougars within one point of the team win as she cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Wojcik at No. 5.
WSU clinched the victory when Huynh capitalized on her third match point in a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Andrinopoulos at No. 4, giving the Cougars an insurmountable 4-0 lead.
At No. 2, Biryukova completed a three-set win with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over Daniel while Michalkova needed a third-set tiebreaker in a 6-4, 6-7 (7), 1-0 (10-4) win at No. 3. Colorado's lone win came at No. 1 where Ormeno Ruiz outlasted Bashota, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Washington State is next in action Friday when it hosts BYU. Match time is set for Noon.
