LAHAINA, Maui – Seniors Trang Huynh and Maria Biryukova picked up singles victories as the Cougars concluded play at the Weinman Foundation Invitational at the Royal Lahaina Tennis Ranch Thursday.
The four-team tournament, which includes WSU, Missouri, Texas Tech and host Hawaii, consists of singles and doubles matches in a non-team scoring format. Texas Tech entered the week with a No. 17 national ranking.
In singles play, Huynh won in straight sets over Hawaii's Roxanne Resma, 7-5, 6-1, her second singles win over the week. Donika Bashota dropped her first match as she fell to No. 77 Gabriela Talaba of Texas Tech, 6-2, 6-2, in the championship match. Texas Tech's Sabrina Federici defeated WSU's Maria Biryukova, 6-2, 6-1, while Federici's teammate, Sarah Dvorak, defeated Cougar senior Lize Leenknecht, 6-0, 6-1. Biryukova also played an eight-game pro set, defeting Texas Tech's Autumn Crossnoe, 8-6.
The remaining singles matches saw Hawaii's Paulina Petriskova defeat WSU's Barbora Michalkova in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 in third-set tiebreaker. WSU dropped a pair of matches to Missouri players as Brittany Lashway defeated Victoria Matejevic, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, and Clare Raley defeated Holly Monahan, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles action, the Cougar duo of Biryukova and Matejevic defeated Hawaii's Marian Hruba and Paulina Petriskova, 6-2. Missouri's Brianna Lashway and Cassidy Spearman escaped with a 7-5 victory over Bashota and Leenknecht while Texas Tech's Felicity Maltby and Sabrina Federici came away with s 6-4 win over Michalkova and Huynh.
The Cougars are next in action Jan. 15 when they host a pair of matches. They face Montana State at 11 a.m. and Idaho later that day at 5 p.m. Both matches will be played at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.
