Whelan, a junior from Etna, Calif., was the top Cougar man to finish the 6000m course in third place with a time of 17 minutes 47.46 seconds. Freshman Nathan Wadhwani from Maple Ridge, British Columbia, Canada, took seventh place in a time of 18:07.26. The Cougar men completing the scoring included: Michael Williams (sophomore, Richland, Wash.) 11th (18:14.06), Chandler Teigen (freshman, Anatone, Wash.) 12th (18:18.78), and Sam Levora (sophomore, Sandpoint, Idaho) 15th (18:29.65). WSU men who competed and their finishes are: Jake Finney (freshman, Post Falls, Idaho) 17th (18:33.18), Nathan Tadesse (freshman, Surrey, B.C.) 19th (18:36.16), Kyler Little (freshman, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) 23rd (18:44.95), Paul Ryan (freshman, Moscow, Idaho) 31st (19:04.46), Reid Muller (freshman, Pitt Meadows, B.C.) 32nd (19:08.47), and Alex Simpson (junior, Asotin, Wash.) 71st (20:56.78).

Sam Adkin from Lewis-Clark State won the men's race with a time of 17:35.17 with Gonzaga's Troy Fraley second in a time of 17:42.13.

In the men's NCAA Division I team dual scoring results were: WSU 15, Eastern Washington 50; WSU 15, Idaho 50; Gonzaga 22, WSU 33; Gonzaga 15, EWU 50; Gonzaga 15, Idaho 49; and EWU 23, Idaho 37.

Linton, a senior from Shoreline, Wash., placed third in the women's 4000m race in a time of 13:48.65, and Bortfeld, a sophomore from Sammamish, Wash., took fourth in 13:56.18. The remaining WSU women who finished in scoring positions included: Emily Dwyer (senior, Sammamish, Wash.) 9th (14:10.08), Morgan Willson (junior, Colfax, Wash.) 11th (14:19.25), and Steffie Pavey (junior, Oldtown, Idaho) 17th (14:40.10). Other Cougars competing and their finishes are: Alexys Garcia (junior, Pullman) 23rd (14:57.56), Anisa Allaet (freshman, Spokane, Wash.) 24th (14:57.85), Katherine Dittmann (freshman, Snohomish, Wash.) 27th (15:00.88), Mallori Lindberg (sophomore, Woodinville, Wash.) 42nd (15:26.46), Betsy Arlt (freshman, Wenatchee, Wash.) 45th (15:34.78), Natalie Ackerley (freshman, Bainbridge, Wash.) 50th (15:49.62), Amanda Henderson (senior, Pullman) 55th (16:04.95), and Breya Wynne (freshman, Compton, Calif.) 77th (18:56.59).

Idaho's Kinsey Gomez won the women's race in a time of 13:40.33 with teammate Sierra Speiker, running unattached, second place in a time of 13:45.55.

The dual team scores for NCAA DI schools were: WSU 22, EWU 33; WSU 22, Gonzaga 37; WSU 22, Idaho 35; EWU 26, Gonzaga 29; EWU 24, Idaho 31; and Idaho 26, Gonzaga 30.

”This was a little bit of a rust buster (competition) to see where we're at this time of year and not get too aggressive,” WSU Director of Track & Field/Cross Country Wayne Phipps said. “Last year we had some great early season success but I think we got a little too aggressive a little too early. We're a little more conservative this time and we executed pretty well. I thought the course was awesome. A ton of work has gone into this and the Colfax Golf Club guys have been fantastic along with Ben Clarke and the WSU facilities guys.”

The next race for the Cougar harriers will be September 19 at the Sundodger Invitational at Lincoln Park in Seattle.
