Adomaviciute Captures Gold at U23 Championships

PLOVDIV, Bulgaria – Washington State University rising-senior Ieva Adomaviciute captured the gold medal in the women's single sculls, while her classmates Morgan Cathrea and Nicole Hare earned silver in the women's four, this past weekend at the 2015 Under 23 World Rowing Championships.
A native of Kaunas, Lithuania, Adomaviciute, represented her country, racing in the women's single sculls, jumping out to an early lead in the event. Adomaviciute led the entire way to capture first place, finishing five-seconds ahead of Lovisa Claesson of Sweden with a time of 7:40.52. Claesson clocked a time of 7:45.13, five seconds ahead of Pascale Walker of Switzerland with a time of 7:50.55.
Cathrea, a native of Victoria, British Columbia, and Hare, a native of Calgary, Alberta, were both chosen to compete with the women's four (W4-) Canadian crew. They were joined in the boat by Caileigh Filmer of Victoria, B.C., who competes collegiately at California and Hillary Janssens of Surrey, B.C., who competes at the University of British Columbia. Hare stroked the boat for the second-straight year, while Cathrea rowed out of the second seat. The Canadians finished the first 1,000 meters in the third place behind the United States and Great Britain, but pulled ahead of the Brits following prior to the 1,500-mark. The Americans won with a time of 6:53.68, followed closely by the Canadians with a time of 6:55.00. Great Britain finished third, followed by Australia, New Zealand and Germany, respectively.
Adomaviciute is a three-year member of the WSU rowing team and has competed with the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four during her time as a Cougar. She helped lead the rowing team to three-straight NCAA Championships, including an eighth-place team finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships. She raced in the six seat of the varsity eight crew which finished ninth at this year's national championships. Following her freshman year in 2013, Adomaviciute was selected as the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year.
Hare is a three-year member of the WSU rowing team and has competed with the varsity eight crew her entire collegiate career. She led the varsity eight boat to three-straight NCAA Championships, including a ninth-place finish and eight-place team finish in 2015. She was chosen as a Collegiate Rowing Coaches' Association (CRCA) Second Team All-America selection earlier this month.
Cathrea is a two-year member of the WSU rowing team after transferring to WSU from Michigan State prior to her sophomore year. She has rowed with the varsity eight crew each of her two seasons, helping the crew to its ninth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Championships as the team placed eighth.
