PHOENIX, Ariz. – Andrew Snow's RBI single in the bottom of the 11th inning lifted No. 12 Arizona State to a 6-5 victory over Washington State Saturday night at Phoenix Municipal Stadium
The 11th inning started with a Cougar (28-25, 10-17) error that allowed Trever Allen to reach base. Allen was promptly sacrificed to second and came around with the winning run on Snow's single to right. The win secured the series victory for Arizona State (32-19, 17-10).
The Sun Devils almost won it in the 10th as Snow led off with a single and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and error. Following a walk to load the bases, reliever Ian Hamilton got a fly out to right and two strikeouts to get out of the inning.
Trailing 5-1 entering the fifth, the Cougars cut the lead in half as Cooper Elliott doubled with one out then Ian Sagdal followed with his team-leading sixth home run of the season, making it 5-3 ASU. In the seventh Ben Roberts' two-out double scored Elliott and Jack Strunc, tying the game.
Arizona State opened the scoring in the first as Brian Serven doubled home David Greer and Jake Peevyhouse for the first two runs then Allen followed one out later with a two-run home run off Cougar starter Ryan Walker for the 4-0 lead.
Washington State scratched back in the fourth as Tyler McDowell singled home Roberts for the Cougars first run. Roberts reached on a single up the middle to open the inning.
After the first inning, the Cougars' bullpen held the Sun Devils bats in check. Matt Bower came on to start the second and went three innings, allowing just one run on four hits. Hamilton (0-4) worked a career-best 4 1/3 innings, allowing four hits with a career-high eight in taking the loss.
At the plate the Cougars pounded out 11 hits as Wes Hatten led the way with three.
Reliever Ryan Burr picked up the win for the Sun Devils, going five innings while striking out seven as he improved to 8-2.
The Cougars return to action Friday when they begin a three-game home series against Stanford to close out the schedule. First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
