PROVO, Utah – Washington State placed four players in the quarterfinals following the first day of play at the 2015 BYU Invitational Friday.
Senior Trang Huyhn and Maria Biryukova each posted straight-set wins in the second round, with Huyhn defeating Boise State's Bobbi Oshiro 6-2, 7-6, while Biryukova cruised past BYU's Brittney Eraso, 6-0, 6-1. Also posting second-round victories for WSU were sophomore Donika Bashota, a 6-1, 1-6, 7-5 victor over Boise State's Nancy Menjivar, while freshman Aneta Miksovska defeated BYU's Erica Valimaki, 6-4, 6-0.
Junior Victoria Matejevic went 1-1 on the day as she defeated Boise State's Kirsty Venter, 6-1, 6-3 before falling to BYU's Toby Miclat, the No. 1 seed, 6-4, 6-1. Senior Lize Leenknecht fell to BYU's Milena Toseva, 1-6, 6-2, 6-0, in the first round, sophomore Holly Monahan dropped a 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 first-round match to BYU's Demi Daniels and freshman Barbora Michalkova dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to Boise State's Megan LaLone.
In doubles play the Cougars won two of five matches on the day as Bashota and Leenknecht advanced to the semifinals with a 6-2 win over Venter and Menjivar. Huyhn and Miksovska defeated Eraso and Daniels, 6-3, in the first round then fell to LaLone and Oshiro, 7-5.
Michalkova and Monahan fell to Alice Patch and Jenna Kane of Utah State, 6-4, and Matejevic and Biryukova lost by a close 6-4 score to Teal Vosburgh and Toseva.
