Another Sweep for Cougar Volleyball

PULLMAN, Wash. -- The Washington State volleyball team moved to 6-1 on the season with a 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 win over Morehead State (2-6) at the Cougar Challenge tournament Friday afternoon in Bohler Gym.

It was a block party for WSU with freshmen Claire Martin and Taylor Mims having five blocks each. Junior Haley MacDonald served six aces, set 22 assists and added four blocks. Junior Kyra Holt led the Cougars with nine kills and had one ace, three digs and two blocks. Freshman McKenna Woodford added eight kills and nine digs with two blocks. Junior Tani Stephens had 10 digs.

Morehead State was led by Merideth Jewell's match-high 14 kills. Bailey Nichol had 24 assists. Alyssa Cecil had 12 digs and Maddie Fella had four blocks.

The Cougars served nine aces Friday afternoon proving why WSU was ranked ninth-best in serving among the 329 DI schools coming into the match. MacDonald was ranked fourth-best nationally in assists per set coming into this contest.

WSU hit .205 for the match and had 12 blocks while Morehead State hit .049 and had seven blocks.

In the opening match of the tournament, Utah Valley defeated Ball State 25-22, 25-22, and 25-23.

The Cougar Challenge continues this evening with Utah Valley (3-5) playing Morehead State (2-6) at 5 p.m., and Washington State (6-1) taking on Ball State (4-4) at 7:30 p.m. in Bohler Gym.
