Cougar Challenge Volleyball Tourney This Weekend

WSU freshmen, ranked the 21st-best class nationally, will compete in Bohler for the first time this weekend.

WSU VOLLEYBALL HOSTS COUGAR CHALLENGE
The Washington State University volleyball team (5-1 ) plays at home for the first time this season, hosting the four-team Cougar Challenge tournament Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12 in Bohler Gym...Cougs meet Morehead State  (2-5) from Kentucky Friday at Noon, Ball State (4-3) from Indiana Friday at 7:30 p.m., and Utah Valley (2-5) Saturday at 7 p.m...complete tournament schedule below...during this tournament, all WSU matches will be webcast free at wsucougars.com.

Jen Stinson Greeny is in her fifth season as WSU's head coach (58-77 at WSU, 5 years; 170-101 in career, 9 years) - complete Greeny bio on page 5...assistant coaches Burdette Greeny (fifth year) and Shannon Hunt (third year)...all coaches are former WSU student-athletes...volunteer coach James Dorr (first year)...Katie Hinrichs is coordinator of operations (fifth year).

> Utah Valley junior OH Kiahna Steiner played 2 years with WSU's Taylor Mims at Billings Senior HS
> WSU has played Utah Valley three times: the first in 2003 at the Utah tournament (pre-Pac-12 for Utes) when it was Utah Valley State, an independant DI school after many years as a community college.
> It has been 38 years since WSU and Ball State played each other (1977) when matches were best of 3 and games (not sets) went to 15 points.

Eight freshmen join the Cougars this season...this class was ranked PrepVolleyball.com's 21st-best in the nation...WSU freshmen are: Olivia Coale, a 5-6 defensive specialist from Vancouver, Wash.; Haley DeSales, 6-0 outside hitter from Burbank, Calif.; Ella Lajos, 6-3 middle blocker from San Jose, Calif.; Claire Martin,  6-4 middle blocker from Tacoma, Tacoma News Tribune's 2014-15 Female Prep Athlete of the Year; Taylor Mims, 6-3 middle blocker from Billings, Mont., Montana's 2014 Gatorade Player of the Year; Jocelyn Urias, 6-3 middle blocker from Tijuana, on Mexican National Team; Katelyn Vander Tuig, 5-10 setter from Tulare, Calif.; and McKenna Woodford, 6-4 outside hitter from Chandler, Ariz., an Under Armour High School All-American, and listed at No. 62 on PrepVolleyball.com's top 100 players in the country.
