Cougar Football Prepares for Spring Practice
PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State University football team will begin its spring practice schedule, Thursday, March 26, the first of 15 practice dates that conclude April 28. The annual Crimson and Gray Game will be held April 25 at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane at 2 p.m. and will be televised by the Pac-12 Networks.
This spring marks the fourth under head coach Mike Leach as the Cougars return 41 lettermen from last season, 18 on offense, 20 on the defense and three on special teams.
Offensively, the Cougars return seven starters from 2014, including the entire offensive line. Led by senior Joe Dahl, who was an All-Pac-12 Conference selection last season, the Cougar line allowed the Cougar offense to break 10 single-game, 18 single-season and eight career records. In 2014 the WSU offense led the nation in passing offense (477.7 ypg) while throwing for a school-record 5,732 yards. The Cougars receiving corp returns River Cracraft, Dom Williams, Robert Lewis, Calvin Green, and will be bolstered by Gabe Marks, who redshirted last season. Redshirt sophomore Jamal Morrow and Gerard Wicks return at running back after the two received the majority of the carries last season. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Luke Falk, who started the final three games in 2014 averaged 309 ypg last season.
Defensively, WSU enters spring under first-year defensive coordinator Alex Grinch, who will work with the Cougar secondary. Also new to the defensive side is outside linebackers coach Roy Manning, who spent last season on the Michigan staff. The Cougars return seven starters from last season, including senior linebacker and All-Pac-12 honoree Jeremiah Allison. Senior linebacker Kache Palacio returns after leading the Cougars in sacks last season with six and was second in tackles-for-loss with nine. Competition in the secondary will be the theme this spring as a handful of underclassmen who saw time in 2014 look to make an impact.
The Cougars will practice Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at Martin Stadium and Rogers Field with the Crimson and Gray Game set for Saturday, April 25 at Joe Albi Stadium.
