Cougars Sweep Toreros

SAN DIEGO – Luke Stratman's RBI-single in the top of the seventh broke a 2-2 tie and Washington State defeated No. 17 San Diego 4-3 in nonconference baseball, Wednesday.

The win completed a sweep by the Cougars (8-9) in the two-game series with the Toreros (14-6). Washington State is riding a four-game winning streak with three of the games decided by a run.

Four Washington State relievers combined to limit San Diego to one run over seven innings.

"Everyone that came out of the bullpen threw the ball well for us," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. "San Diego is a very good offensive club and our arms did a great job."

The Cougars got on the board first with a run in the second inning. P.J. Jones led off with a single and stole second. With two outs, Michael Monda singled to score Jones.

The Toreros answered with two runs in the bottom of the second on a home run, hit batter and two wild pitches sandwiched around a ground out.

Washington State tied the game in the sixth when Nick Tanielu was hit by a pitch with two outs and scored on a double by Yale Rosen. In the seventh, Monda singled with two outs, stole second and scored on the go-ahead single by Stratman off San Diego's Wed Judish (0-2).

In the ninth, the Cougars picked up an insurance run. Ben Roberts led off the frame with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice by Matt Mendenhall. Trek Stemp walked and with two outs, Roberts and Stemp executed a double steal. Collin Slaybaugh walked and Roberts scored as Stemp took third when ball four was mishandled for a passed ball.

The run proved necessary when the Toreros scored a run on three hits against Cougar closer Ian Hamilton in the ninth before Hamilton recorded the final out for his sixth save. Kellen Camus (2-0), the third of five Washington State hurlers, struck out three in two shutout innings and picked up in the victory.

The Cougars return to Pac-12 play when they open a three-game series at No. 14 UCLA, Friday at 6 p.m.
