Coca-Cola Recycling Bin Grant to Help Clean up WSU Campus
PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University has received the Coca-Cola/Keep America Beautiful Recycling Bin Grant and will be the recipient of 125 recycling bins which will be used to improve recycling efforts in the department of intercollegiate athletics, University Recreation facilities and Beasley Coliseum, as well as at intercollegiate athletic and special events.
WSU is committed through its Environmental Management System (EMS) and Sustainability Initiative to continually improve its environmental performance by setting and achieving goals and the grant will help accomplish just that.
"We are grateful for the opportunity given to the university through Coca-Cola's grant to enhance recycling efforts at Washington State athletic events," Associate Athletic Director for Event and Facility Operations, Shawn Deeds said. "The university has shown a strong emphasis on environmental improvement and we are excited to be able to contribute as an athletics department."
While Washington State has a recycling program on campus that has been successfully established, its focus has been primarily on areas with routine, day-to-day usage, such as classroom and laboratory buildings. Due to limited number of recycling containers and lack of uniformity, WSU has had limited success in promoting recycling at athletic and special events, as well as University Recreation facilities. With the grant, recycling containers can be placed next to each waste receptacle as an alternative waste management option, making recycling more convenient and improving the recycling rates at events.
Improving recycling at athletic and special events will provide an opportunity to not only educate and promote recycling at Washington State, but also the larger population of WSU fans who return to campus for athletic and special events, such as football games. The new containers provided by the grant also show a commitment for environmental stewardship by both Coca-Cola and WSU.
