TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona defeated Washington State 12-1 in the Pac-12 Conference opener for both schools Friday night at Hi Corbett Field.

James Farris (4-1) went the distance for the Wildcats (11-9) and did not give up a run until the ninth inning while striking out nine. Jason Monda (0-1) gave up three runs on six hits and was the losing pitcher.

“We lacked aggressiveness,” Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said. “We just have to do a better job and try and come back to win a series.”

Arizona took a 3-0 lead against Monda in the second inning before adding two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth against the Washington State (4-9) bullpen.

The Cougars scored with two outs in the ninth on a pinch-hit single by freshman Cameron Frost, his first-career hit, and an RBI-double by Ian Sagdal.

The series continues, Saturday at 6 p.m.
