PULLMAN - Washington State men's and women's teams won the dual competition over Idaho and Montana Saturday in the final day of the Cougar Indoor Invitational scoring meet at the Indoor Facility in Pullman. The WSU men defeated Idaho 96-25, and downed Montana 105-15. The Cougar women bested Idaho 73-48, and defeated Montana 92-31. Idaho defeated Montana with the men's score 59-51, and the women's score 79-42.

"I was very happy with the success for the Cougars today," WSU Head Coach Rick Sloan said. "We had a good battle going with the Idaho women's team and we got rolling late in the meet and pulled that out. The score is not indicative of how close the meet was. I'm happy with the men's team as well, for competing as well as they did today."

A trio of meet records were broken Saturday starting with Cougar Danny Wolf. The men's 400m dash record was broken twice, with a photo finish by both winner Ben Ayesu-Attah (48.28) of Idaho and WSU's Bria'una Watley, Bree Winfrey, Dominique Keel and Shawna Fermin won in a time of 3:46.07 erasing the USC 2006 relay record time of 3:46.30.

It was a first through third finish in the men's 60m dash with Andre McBride (PR 6.95) and Brett Blanshan (7.07). Blanshan came back to win the 200m (22.15) with WSU's trio of Dana Wells, Rashaun Johnson and Terrance Chambers following. Hornsby, Lucas Sealby, Daquon Brunson and Jacob Sealby won the 1600m relay with a time of 3:17.21.

Jesse Jorgensen and Matthew Swanson went one-two in the men's 800m and Wakefield led the Cougars in the top of the mile standings with Richard Shroy finishing in order. Justin Englund ran a team-leading time of 8:29.23 to win the 3000m Andrew Gonzales and Forrest Shaffer finishing respectively. Josiah Sims tallied a win in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.25 followed by Garrett Gerling and Aric Walden.

All-American Tay'lor Eubanks second and PJ Benedictus third. Oliver Henry won the shot put with a PR heave of 50-3 1/4 (15.32m).

In the men's heptathlon, not part of the scoring meet, Cougar redshirt sophomore Spencer Wordell was the runner-up with a PR total of 5,143 points, behind Montana State's Jeff Mohl who won with a total of 5,462 points.

On the women's side, Cindy Robinson led a one-two-three Cougar 60m dash finish with Robinson running a time of 7.62 followed by Keel's PR of 7.65, and Fermin in a time of 7.66. Robinson came back and scored second in the 200m (25.20) with Mercedes Smith third and Holly DeHart fourth. In the middle distances, WSU's Courtney Zalud won the 800m (2:15.65), Ruby Roberts won the mile (4:49.31), and Caroline Austin cruised to the 3000m win (10:08.04). Emily Dwyer had an impressive 3k second place finish (10:26.27). On the infield, Holly Parent won the high jump and Kristine Felix took the pole vault but have better marks already this season.

Members of the Washington State track and field teams will compete at the Vandal Indoor Friday, Feb. 1, and at the Vandal Collegiate Saturday, Feb. 2. Both meets will be held at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow, Idaho.

ADDITIONAL SLOAN QUOTES: "The women's 60m had good depth and strength with Shawna Fermin coming down for the 400m to run a good 60m along with Cindy Robinson. Dominque Keel is really coming along as a freshman and starting to perform for us from the 60m all the way up to the 4x400m relay. Shawna ran a 54.4 split on her anchor leg of the relay and made it look easy. All the women on that relay ran a good race on this track. Courtney Zalud competed in the 800m and got us a win in that race. Erin Allen did a great job of competing after we entered her in the 60m hurdles for some points and she won and then came back and ran a strong 400m dash for third. I'm happy to see Erin coming along as she is. "On the men's side, Justin Englund ran a smart race winning the 3000m. The men's high hurdlers continue to do a good job with consistent runs. Last but not least is Spencer Wordell in his first multi meet as a Cougar. I think he had high goals for this meet and is a little disappointed but he had four or five lifetime-best performances through the meet and he will be a very good heptathlete/decathlete and we will keep moving him forward."
