PULLMAN, Wash. - The Washington State women's tennis team rolled through the first round of the annual Cougar Classic sending seven singles players into the semifinal round and sending all four doubles teams into the quarterfinals.

"We are extremely proud of the way our players competed today," Washington State Head Coach Lisa Hart said. "I am especially impressed with our freshmen, Oprea and Fournier and the way they competed in their first collegiate matches. With them and the rest of our team, the future of Cougar tennis is bright."

In No. 1 singles, Sophomore Ekaterina Kamendova led the way for the Cougars with two straight set victories defeating Montana's Liz Walker, 6-2, 6-4, followed with a win over the University of Portland's Stephanie Fuchs, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman Ioana Oprea had an impressive first collegiate match downing Eastern Washington's Marie Demerath in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, then going on to defeat Aglaya Kokurina of Gonzaga, 6-2, 6-0, propelling herself into the semifinals.

Senior Aleksandra Cekic defeated Amanda Mankovits of Eastern Washington, 7-5, 6-0 and then downed Montana State's Ali Griffin, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Freshman Elisabeth Fournier won a tough three set match over Portland State's Molly Knox, 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Fournier then went on to defeat Gonzaga's Clare Dodge in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2.

In No. 3 singles, sophomore Jessica Gomez defeated Gonzaga's Kristina Zauere in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Gomez then went on to defeat Anya Dalkin from Portland State, 6-0, 6-0. Marina Nicolas found the same success downing Eastern Washington's Heather Handwerk , 6-2, 6-1. Nicolas continued her success by posting a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gonzaga's Madeline Parker. Senior Bianca Selaru won her first match of the day downing Montana's Kayla Moyse, 6-2, 6-2, but then fell to McKenzie Hilmer of Montana State, 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals.

Sophomore Jessica Casebier fell in her first match of the tournament to Justine Textor of Idaho, 2-6, 7-5, 6-0, but rebounded with a win over Gonzaga's Allyson Lee, 7-6(2), 6-1 at No. 4. Livia Gherman posted a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Idaho's Justine Textor and then finished off her day with a 6-2, 6-7(4), 6-3 victory over Eastern Washington's Caitlin Bampton.

In No. 1 doubles, teammates Bianca Selaru and Marina Nicolas defeated Marie Demerath and Kelsey Knight of Eastern Washington, 8-5. Ekaterina Kamendova and Ioana Oprea downed Montana's Liz Walker and Martyna Nowak, 8-5.

Aleksandra Cekic and Elisabeth Fournier earned an 8-2 victory over Idaho's Justine Textor and Annamarie Gould, 8-2, while Livia Gherman and Jessica Gomez picked up a 8-2 victory over Montana's Kayla Moyse and Lauren Gibson.

Play will resume Saturday September 20, at 8:30 in the morning.
