PULLMAN, Wash. - UC Davis scored five times in the first inning and cruised to a 12-5 victory over Washington State in nonconference baseball at Bailey-Brayton Field, Friday.

"We had a tough first inning and we did nothing offensively to make a game out of it," Cougar Head Coach Donnie Marbut said.

The Aggies (19-8) scored all of their first inning runs off Ross Humes (2-1). Ryan Royster led off with a double. Ty Kelly was hit by a pitch and Jake Jeffries singled to load the bases. Evan Hudson drove in the first run with a sacrifice fly. After Ryan Scoma walked to load the bases, Kyle Mihaylo delivered a three-run triple. Mihaylo came into score on a ground out by Kevin James.

Mihaylo was the offensive star for the Aggies going 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, a home run, and five RBI. He doubled leading off the sixth and scored one out later on a RBI-single by Matt Dempsey to increase the UC Davis lead to 6-0.

In the seventh, Jeffries hit a solo home run and Mihaylo added a two-run shot off Matt Argyropoulos to stretch the Aggies' advantage to 9-0.

The Cougars (16-11) broke through for three runs in the bottom of the seventh off winning pitcher Eddie Gamboa (5-0). Ryan Peterson and Scott Suttmeier opened with pinch-hit singles. With one out, Garry Kuykendall collected a run-scoring single. Michael Weber followed with a single and Suttmeier scored when James misplayed the ball in left field. Out out later, Travis Coulter knocked in a run with an infield single cutting the WSU deficit to 9-3.

Both team tallied twice in the eighth. The Cougars scored on a RBI-ground out by Brodie McCormack and a run-scoring single by Kuykendall. The Aggies added a run in the ninth off Garrett Kimbrel to complete the scoring.

The teams continue their series with a doubleheader Saturday. The first game is scheduled for 2 p.m.
