PULLMAN, Wash. - Washington State sophomore guard Colleen Betteridge and junior guard Katie Appleton each scored in double figures against Santa Clara Tuesday night, but the Cougars were unable to hold off a late charge and fell 62-52 to the Broncos. WSU fell to 0-2 on the season, while Santa Clara evened its season record at 1-1.

Appleton scored 11 points, and nearly recorded a double-double by adding a team-high nine rebounds. Betteridge scored a team-high 12 points against the Broncos.

The Cougars led at halftime (33-31) thanks in part to their 3-point shooting, hitting 5-of-9 first half attempts. WSU also went 13-of-30 from the field in the first half (.433), and went into halftime with a 21-15 edge in rebounding. The Cougars won the battle of the boards 43-32 on the game.

The teams were tied at 51 with 4:17 left in regulation before consecutive 3-pointers from Santa Clara's Chandice Cronk and Elizabeth Dorian put the Broncos up by six.

After a free throw from freshman guard Kezia Kelly put the Cougars within five at just under two minutes, Dorian hit another 3-pointer and Kelli Parker hit two free throws to close out the game's scoring.

The Cougars continue the non-conference portion of their schedule against Eastern Washington, Sunday. The game is slated to tipoff at 2:05 p.m., at Reese Court in Cheney, Wash.
