BERKELEY, Calif. -- Washington State thrower McKenzie Burgess and triple jumper Jamil Smith each achieved NCAA Regional Qualifying marks Friday at the Brutus Hamilton Invitational Track & Field Meet at Edwards Stadium and Goldman Field.

Burgess, a redshirt freshman from Benton City, Wash., threw the discus a PR and NCAA RQ distance of 156-feet, 4 inches (47.66m) for fifth place.

Smith, a senior from Palmdale, Calif., won the men's triple jump with a leap of 49-11 1/4 (15.22m). Teammate Martin Boston leaped a PR of 48-11 1/2 (14.92m) for third place.

Other notable Cougar field performances Friday included Kaylee Gardner's PR in the women's triple jump of 39-3 1/4 (11.97m) for fifth place.

On the track, WSU freshman Collier Lawrence (freshman, Reno) ran the 3000m steeplechase in a PR time of 11-minutes, .71 seconds for fourth place while Kayle Peterson (sophomore, Port Orchard, Wash.) finished sixth in 11:06.42. In the men's steeple, Alex Grant (sophomore, Bellingham, Wash.) took third place and freshman Phil Hinrichs (Pullman) placed fourth in PR times of 9:09.35 and 9:19.89 respectively.

The Brutus Hamilton Invite continues Saturday at Berkeley.
