Despite a solid performance by starting pitcher Aaron MacKenzie, the Washington State baseball team lost in the tenth inning, 3-2 to Texas-Pan American Friday night at Edinburg Stadium.
MacKenzie (2-0) in seven innings struck out six while allowing five hits, one score on an earned run while facing 26 batters. Brandon Hunt (0-1) took the loss for WSU (5-3) to Pan-American (7-8) in the first of a three-game series, pitching two innings while allowing three hits and two runs, one earned.
"MacKenzie pitched very, very well," WSU head coach Tim Mooney said after the game. "We had another great starting performance and we wasted it tonight."
Jusing Bogy (1-0) came to pitch in the tenth and earned the win retiring all three batters he faced.
The Cougars failed to score until the seventh inning when Jeremy Farrar was hit by a pitch and then advanced the next two bases on errors committed by the Broncs. Zach McAngus reached on an error that also scored an unearned run by Farrar.
WSU tied the game up in the ninth on a run by J.J. Burress who pinch ran for Farrar who had singled up the middle. The next at-bat for the Cougs Jason Freeman was walked, then Zack Kosturos grounded out to first advancing Freeman and Burress. Brandon Reddinger singled to shortstop to score Burress.
Texas-Pan American scored the first run of the game in the third inning when Ricky Broyles doubled to left field, follwed by Louie Alamia hitting a single up the left side to score Broyles. In the bottom of the eighth the Broncs scored their second run when Alamia reached base with a single and was advanced to second on a wild pitch. Tony Ortiz scored Alamia with a single to left center.
In extra innings Texas-Pan American scored the winning run when Alamia walked to start the inning. John Lopez reached on a fielder's choice to advance Alamia to second who then reached third on a throwing error. WSU intentionally walked Ortiz to load the bases. Marco Garza hit the game winning single to score Alamia.
"We didn't hit," Mooney added. "We just weren't very good offensively."
WSU will start Aaron Trolia (1-0) Saturday to take on Texas-Pan American in its second game at Noon at Edinburg Field.
