SEATTLE, Wash. - The No. 29 WSU women's tennis team fell 4-3 to the No. 11 Washington Huskies Saturday in the Cougars' second match of the season at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Sophomore Lorena Arias and freshman Chris Martinez each picked up a victory in singles action. Arias, a native of Mexico, defeated the Huskies' Ilona Kordonskaya 6-7, 6-1, 6-2, while Martinez downed Erin Hoe 6-0, 6-4.
Washington's Darija Klaic outlasted No. 38 Eric Perkins 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, and Claire Carter beat WSU's Stacy McKenna 6-1, 7-6.
The Cougars gained a measure of revenge in doubles play, taking two of three from the Huskies. McKenna and Perkins, ranked No. 22, upset No. 15 Carter and Klaic 8-6. The WSU team of Zorana Roganovic and Orsi Sallai also picked up a victory over Hoe and Kordonskaya.
The Cougars are now 0-2 overall, while the Huskies improved their record to 3-0.
The Cougars will face San Diego State Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle.
