PULLMAN - The Washington State women's tennis team picked up where it left off last season.

After advancing to the second round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, the Cougars opened their 2001-02 campaign dominating the competition in the 10th Annual Cougar Classic Friday.

Led by 24th-ranked Erica Perkins, the Cougars went 18-0 during day one of the tournament. In first round singles play, Perkins defeated Montana's Sarah Blain, 6-2, 6-2. In the second round, she beat Jamie Buterbaugh of Gonzaga, 6-1, 6-1.

"It's always fun to play in Pullman," Perkins said. "It's always great to be out with the team and have Cougar fans supporting us. I played pretty well. I started off a little cold, but then I came out of it and by the end of the day I was feeling sharp."

Stacy McKenna, ranked 83rd in the nation, began her day by defeating Gonzaga Bulldog Aaryn Volkman, 6-1, 6-3. In her second match, McKenna beat Montana's Molly Sanders, 6-0, 6-0.

Perkins and McKenna advanced to the championship match of their draws, as did Lorena Arias, Chris Martinez-Hernandez, Orsolya Sallai, Zorana Roganovic, Zofia Fodor and Nora Gaal for the Cougars.

In doubles play, the No. 27 combo of McKenna and Perkins outlasted Gonzaga's Buterbaugh and Taio Miller, 8-1.

"We played well," WSU Head Coach Cari Croce said. "We came out and kept our composure. We had some good matches and did what we needed to do to finish them. I was really pleases with the doubles. We played aggressively. Saturday will be a tougher day with a lot of good match-ups. We'll need to come out here ready to go."

The Classic resumes Saturday at 8 a.m. with two rounds of doubles play and one round of singles.
