Coach Fredrick Tallies 300th Career Volleyball Win

FRESNO, Calif. -- Washington State University opened the Fresno State Invitation Volleyball Tournament with a 3-0 win over UC Riverside Friday morning at North Gym on the Fresno State University campus. It was Cougar coach Cindy Fredrick's 300th career win in her 16 seasons of collegiate coaching (300-202 career, 214-142 in 12 years at WSU).

In the opening match of the two-day tournament, WSU defeated UC Riverside 15-0, 15-4, 15-11, and only the setters had double-figure marks.

The Cougars hit .474 in the first game, scoring on 10 kills with only one error in 19 attacks. In addition, WSU scored the "bagel" with four service aces and four blocks. With liberal substitutions in the second and third games, WSU won handily. Latvian freshman Zanda Bautre led the match with nine kills and hit .600 playing in only the last two games.

This was the UCR Highlanders' second match in their first season of NCAA Div. I competition after successfully competing at the Div. II level. They were led by the six kills of Katie DeRoos. UCR drops to 0-2.

WSU, now 5-0, takes on Cal State Fullerton at 5:30 p.m. PT this evening. This match and all future away matches for the Cougar volleyball team can be heard on the internet at www.wsucougars.com.
