TUCSON, Ariz. -- Left fielder Kenny Huff went 5-for-6 with four RBI and hit for the elusive cycle as the Arizona Wildcats pounded out a season-high 28 hits en route to a 21-3 Pac-10 win over the Washington State Cougar baseball team Saturday afternoon at Sancet Field in Tucson.
The win by Arizona prevented a series sweep by the Cougars and improved the Wildcats season mark to 22-25, 7-11 in the Pac-10. WSU fell to 16-26 for the year and 4-11 in league play. The 2-1 series win for the Cougs was only their fourth of the year and their second in the Pac-10 dating back to March 3-5, at Cal.
Huff, who became the first Wildcat to hit for the cycle since 1995, recorded a triple in the first inning, a single in the second, a solo home run in the sixth, and a double in his last at-bat in the eighth. Huff also added another single in the seventh to cap his landmark game, going 5-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Wildcats scored early and often in the contest to put the Cougs away early and make a winner of starting pitcher Tony Milo. Milo, who saw action as a reliever in Thursday's series opening game, was sharp on the hill with a season-high 11 strikeouts in seven innings. Milo scattered nine hits and allowed only two runs to cross the plate in his outing.
Arizona jumped out to a quick start with 11 runs in the first three innings. They scored virtually all the runs they needed in the first frame to scatter WSU starter Reggie Rivard (0-4) from the game. The Wildcats batted around in the inning and scored four runs. Huff capped the rally with his RBI triple to the right field gap.
The Wildcats opened the game up even further in the seventh and eighth innings. Despite holding a 13-2 lead, they poured on nine more runs in the final two frames to bring the game to the final score of 21-3. Every Wildcat in the starting lineup, with the exception of shortstop Brad Hassey, recorded at least two hits.
Troy Gingrich (3x6), Trevor Mote (3x5), Ben Diggins (4x5), Ernie Durazo (3x5), Ryan O'Donnell (4x5), Erik Torres (3x6) and Huff had big days at the plate. In the sixth Torres and Huff hit back-to-back home runs for their 10th and 6th home runs of the year respectively. Diggins also smashed his eighth home of the year in the third.
The Cougars were led by seniors Shawn Stevenson and Ray Hattenburg who each recorded two-hit games. Hattenburg finished 2-for-4, notching his team-leading 21st multiple-hit game of the year. Stefan Bailie, Jason Grove and Wes Falkenborg each plated a run to account for the WSU scoring. With Falkenborg's ninth-inning, pinch-hit single, the redshirt freshman is now 8-for-12 (.667) as a pinch-hitter.
The Cougars will return to Bailey-Brayton Field next weekend with a three-game series against the UCLA Bruins. Games will be played Friday (3 p.m.), Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m.
