SAN DIEGO - San Diego State swept a pair of close double matches to post a 5-3 victory over Washington State, Tuesday.
Lisa Papi and Katja Karrento defeated WSU's Melissa Pine and Ana Moura, 8-6 at No.2 doubles while Katey Becker and Lindsey Hedberg teamed for an 8-5 win over Tamara Filipovic and Kathleen Pienaar at No. 3 doubles.
The losses were the first this season for both of the Cougars' doubles teams.
Pine, Filipovic and Moniek van de Ven each posted victory for the Cougars in singles action. The win by van de Ven was her fourth consecutive during the current road trip.
"It is upsetting to lose to an non-conference opponent at this point in the season," WSU head coach Cari Groce said. Our conference is really strong and deep and we have to win our non-conference matches to improve our chances for the postseason."
Patrycja Gajdzik came close to giving the Cougars a 4-2 advantage heading into doubles play, but lost a third set tiebreaker to Whitney Wells.
WSU concludes its five-match road trip versus Princeton at the University of San Diego, Wednesday at 10 a.m.
