WSU Women's Tennis Blasts Pacific, 8-1

Feb. 26, 2000

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Cougars dominated the courts at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle Saturday, as they defeated the University of the Pacific 8-1 in a dual hosted by the University of Washington.

WSU swept the singles competition, and won two of three doubles matches.

"I thought it would be a closer match," WSU head coach Cari Groce said. "They have a lot of really good players. Our team just didn't let them into the match."

Senior Patrycja Gajdzik (Szczecin, Poland), who seemed to be struggling earlier in the season, defeated Christiane Barthel (6-2, 6-3) at the No.1 singles position. Senior Melissa Pine (Newfoundland, Canada) continued to improve her winning streak as she defeated Anouk Sinnige in three sets (6-1,5-7,6-2) at the No. 2 position.

"It was a really good day," Groce said. "Hopefully that will give us some momentum going into tomorrow against Fresno State."

The win for the Cougars improves their record to 5-3 overall. They will face No. 24 Fresno State at the Nordstrom Tennis Center Sunday at 10 a.m.
