BERKELEY, Calif. -- California defeated Washington State 3-0 in Pacific-10 volleyball for the first time since 1990, Saturday night at the Recreation Sports Facility on the UC Berkeley campus. The game scores were California 16-14, 15-7, 15-7.

Washington State drops to 10-6 overall, 1-6 in Pac-10 Conference play, while California moves to 8-6 overall, 4-4 in conference play. After starting the season 8-0, WSU has lost six of its last eight matches. Four of those losses have come on the road.

Cal's Alicia Perry led the match with 18 kills and contributed 14 digs. Gabrielle Abernathy added 16 kills while Reena Pardiwala had nine blocks. WSU's LaToya Harris led the Cougs with 14 kills. Cougar setter Kali Surplus had 33 assists and a career-high seven blocks. No Cougars had double-figure digs.

WSU hit .150 for the match while Cal hit .288.

After a 1-5 start in the Pac-10, WSU head coach Cindy Fredrick changed the Cougar lineup, giving Melissa Boyle her first start at the middle, keeping Kortney Jamtaas in the rotation to play the front row, and subbing in freshman Nohea Tano. California overcame a 14-9 lead by the Cougs and stopped WSU five times at game point service. Abernathy, Perry and Pardiwala paced the Bears 16-14 comeback win.

Game two was all Bears with Abernathy tagging five kills while the Cougars had eight kills and eight errors for zero hitting percentage. Cal hit .296 in their 15-7 win.

The wheels fell off the Cougar wagon and nothing went right for WSU in game three. Cal took a 10-3 lead before WSU made a short run and scored four straight points. Cougar hitting errors and the Bear's continued dominance in the front row saw Cal run-off the final five points for a 15-7 win.

Washington State returns to Bohler Gym for matches Friday, Oct. 13, against Oregon State, and Saturday, Oct. 14 with Oregon.
