When Washington State University added women’s soccer as an NCAA athletic program in 1989, Cougar Athletic Director Jim Livengood turned to Lisa Fraser to guide the team. Fraser did not disappoint. During her five-year tenure in Pullman (1989-93), Fraser led the Cougars to five-straight winning seasons, compiling a 52-31-7 overall record. In WSU’s inaugural NCAA season, the Cougars posted a 10-6-1 record and saw further gains the following year, recording a 14-6 record while Fraser was recognized as the Northwest Collegiate Soccer Conference Coach of the Year. Milestones continued to follow for the program: The first win over a Top 20 program with a triumph over Washington in 1991 and defeating No. 6 Stanford in the 1993 home opener, the program’s first win over a top 10 team, which propelled the Cougars to a then program-best No. 11 ranking early in the 1993 season. Throughout her tenure, Fraser coached six student-athletes to first-team all-conference honors, including WSU’s all-time goal leader Kim Lynass. While Fraser’s Cougar career concluded in grand fashion with a 4-2 overtime victory at UCLA, her impact was definitely felt the next season as WSU reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history.
