Derick Hinch

Derick Hinch is heading into his first season as associate head coach for Washington State's men's and women's track & field programs.  Hinch brings six years of collegiate coaching experience to WSU and spent the past three seasons at Cornell University.  Hinch will coach jumpers, vaulters and multi-event athletes at Washington State.

Hinch oversaw 52 top-10 performances at Cornell including three of indoor school records in the women’s pentathlon, pole vault and 60m hurdles, respectively.  He also oversaw three outdoor records at Cornell in the women's pole vault, women's high jump and women's heptathlon. Under his tutelage Big Red student-athletes won seven conference titles and earned six all-american honors.

Before making the move up to Division I at Cornell, he spent one season with the Western Colorado University as an assistant coach for track & field and facilities coordinator. He coached five student-athletes to seven top-10 performances and two school records.

Hinch got his first collegiate coaching job as a graduate assistant at Minnesota State University - Mankato. There he focused on coaching the jumps, sprints, multi-events, and hurdles. During his time in Mankato, the Mavericks flourished winning a seventh-consecutive Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) indoor men's team title by nearly 100 points in addition to a runner-up finish for the women in 2018.  The 2017-18 indoor season was capped with Hinch overseeing his first NCAA all-american performance (men's triple jump) at the 2018 NCAA DII indoor championships and an individual DII national champion in the women's high jump.

As a competitor, Hinch was a standout both on the California juco scene and later in the Pac-12 where he competed for Arizona State from 2011-14.  He won over 10 meets and won the California Junior College State Championship as a sophomore at Cuesta Community College after taking a redshirt year as a freshman.

Hinch made an immediate impact after transferring to ASU, finishing third in the 2012 NCAA DI outdoor championships with a personal best mark of 5.50m (18'0.5" ) in the pole vault which still ranks second all-time.  He also helped ASU to back-to-back indoor MPSF indoor track & field team titles in 2013-14.  Hinch  later went on to train and compete as an OTC Elite Athlete from 2014-17, placing top-10 at multiple USATF Outdoor Championships and reached a lifetime PR in the pole vault at 5.56m (18' 3") during his post-collegiate career.

Hinch obtained his bachelor’s in sociology with a minor in sustainability from Arizona State ('14) and has his Masters in Sports Management from Minnesota State Mankato.
