GOLD RIVER, Calif. - The Washington State University women's rowing team completed two sessions of racing Saturday at the Lake Natoma Invitational. Washington State will compete against No 12 Notre Dame and No. 15 Wisconsin in racing action Sunday.
Leading off the morning's racing was the varsity four boat (bow - Carter Marks, Megan McDonald, Ashlee Bonahoom, Gina Head, coxswain - Heidi Kim), which finished second in its heat with a time of 7:18.5, less than five seconds behind California. During the afternoon session, the varsity four grabbed a first-place finish ahead of competitors Stanford and Kansas. The Cougars clocked a time of 7:36.9, six seconds ahead of second-place Stanford and 24 seconds ahead of Kansas.
"I think the varsity four performed really well," said head coach Jane LaRiviere. "Overall, we raced okay, but the team learned a lot and there are plenty of places to improve for tomorrow."
WSU's varsity eight (bow - Mickey Aylard, Katie Dick, Mollie McCabe, Ieva Adomaviciute, Stephanie Hinkle, Nicole Hare, Kellen Srb, Kendall Boliba, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) grabbed second-place finishes in both of its races. During the morning session the Cougars finished the race in 6:47.6, 8 seconds behind No. 2 California.
In the afternoon session, the eight secured a second-place finish behind No. 9 Stanford, and 16 seconds ahead of Kansas, with a time of 6:49.0.
The second varsity eight (bow - Emily Starkel, Carly Johnson, Samantha Hoeper, Hannah deVos, Erin Schuster, Alison Smith, Kellen Srb, Elise Jones, coxswain - Sarah Wu) took the course at 9 a.m. and garnered a second-place finish behind California with a time of 6:56.5, exactly 17 seconds ahead of Sacramento State. In the afternoon flight, the Cougars clocked a time of 6:59.8 to place second behind Stanford.
The Cougars were also one of six crews to launch a novice eight to compete in racing during the afternoon session. The WSU boat out-stroked its competitors in Heat B to a first place finish with a time of 7:11.4. Washington State finished seven seconds ahead of No.1 USC and also defeated California and Sacramento State.
Entering the second day of racing, the Cougars will compete against No. 12 Notre Dame and No. 15 Wisconsin, as racing will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday morning at Lake Natoma. Results from all races will be tweeted by @NatomaInvite on Twitter or can be found at www.calbears.com or www.row2k.com.
