Women's Rowing Sweeps Gonzaga for Second-Consecutive Year

PULLMAN, Wash. - The 18th ranked Washington State women's rowing team started its 2013 spring season in dual action against Gonzaga Saturday at Wawawai Landing, sweeping Gonzaga for the second consecutive year and retaining the Fawley Cup. The Cougars launched nine boats into the choppy water conditions and 10 mile per hour direct headwind.

"I feel pretty good, it was a good race to have before San Diego," WSU Head Coach Jane LaRiviere said. "They had to handle some pretty challenging conditions. It was a pretty severe 10 mph wind and a pretty steady chop the first 1,000 meters. I think they were definitely tested."

Fighting whitecaps the first 1,000 meters, the WSU varsity eight (bow - Emily Starkel, Nicole Hare, Stephanie Hinkle, Ieva Adomaviciute, Mollie McCabe, Katie Dick, Allie Reilly, Kendall Boliba, coxswain - Emily Boquet) captured the fifth-consecutive Fawley Cup with its victory. WSU out-stroked Gonzaga's varsity eight with a time of 7:46.11 compared to the Bulldog's time of 8:04.98.

Following the varsity fours, the second varsity eights took to the course for their respective schools. WSU's second varsity eight (bow - Mickey Aylard, Gina Head, Erin Schuster, Hannah deVos, Jennifer Hale, Alison Smith, Kellen Srb, Elise Jones, coxswain - Rebecca Burns) defeated Gonzaga's second varsity eight by over 17 seconds with a time of 7:58.55.

Washington State launched two boats for the varsity four event and Gonzaga launched one. Taking first was the WSU second varsity four (bow - Carter Marks, Megan McDonald, Ashlee Bonahoom, Brianne Gould, coxswain - Heidi Kim) with a time of 8:44.7. The WSU varsity four (bow - Samantha Hoeper, Noël Christiansen, Liana DeMaris, Ella Odland, coxswain Sarah Wu) clocked at 8:47.2, less than three seconds behind. Gonzaga finished third with a time of 10:07.2.

The second event consisted of WSU's third varsity eight boat up against Gonzaga's second varsity eight. Washington State (bow - Erin Ranney, Krista Lizardi, Alex Waddell, Alyssa Rumann, coxswain - Lauren Leahy) won the event, finishing the course in 9:19.95. Gonzaga finished with a time of 10:00.64.

In the opening race of the regatta, the WSU novice eight (bow - Savannah Davison, Sarah Steger, Mallory Yost, Alex Backsen, Jordan Watson, Regina Snider, Chloe Rogers, Katrina Tarrant, coxswain - Cassandra Vandersloot) defeating Gonzaga by nearly 15 seconds with a time of 8:07.8.

In the final event, WSU launched its fourth varsity eight, second novice eight, and third novice eight. Gonzaga launched its fourth varsity eight. Claiming first place in the event was the WSU fourth varsity eight (bow - Molly Culwell, Hannah Jacobs, Martha Jackson, Chloe Payne, Courtney Hammer, Alyssa Rumann, Erin Ranney, Brianne Gould, coxswain - Julia Monroe) with a time of 8:33.6.

The second novice eight (bow - Jayme Dailey, Kyra Ilyankoff, Kendall Dougherty, Aley Roberts, Amy Jacobs, Alex Newcomb, Bethany Pupava, JoAnne Bates, coxswain Cassandra Evans) edged the Gonzaga fourth varsity eight by 2.3 seconds with a time of 8:49.8 to take second place. The third novice eight (bow - Alex Backsen, Hayley Lawrence, Michele Fuerst, Mallory Yost, Kim Coon, Savannah Davison, Regina Snider, Chloe Rogers, Cassandra Vandersloot) finished in 9:18.9.

The Cougars will head to San Diego, Calif, returning to the water next Saturday and Sunday, April 6 and 7 to compete in the San Diego Crew Classic at Mission Bay.
