COUGAR TRACK WRAPS UP MOOBERRY MEETS WITH DOUBLE DUAL: The Palouse Team Invitational Meet features Long Beach State and Boise State in double-dual competition with host Washington State...Long Beach State and Boise State are both members of the Big West Conference...this will be the final dual competition for the Cougars in the 2001 season, and the final track meet at home...team scoring will be 5-3-1 for individual events, and 5-0 for relays...field events begin at 10 a.m. with the men's pole vault, long jump and javelin...running events are set to begin at 1:15 p.m...a limited number of Cougars will also compete Sunday at the Vandal Jamboree at Moscow, Idaho.
COUGAR INVITATIONAL COLLEGIATE HIGHLIGHTS: Seventeen meet records were rewritten at the collegiate portion of the Second Annual Cougar Invitational Track & Field Meet, and the WSU women were responsible for eight while the Cougar men accounted for four more. Leading the way was thrower Andrea Thornton, winning both the hammer (57.72m/189-4) and the discus (52.12m/171-0). Becky Potter, won the shot put with a bettered meet mark of 14.61m/47-11 1/4, but did not compete in the discus after feeling a pop in her calf muscle and ended the meet on crutches. The women's pole vault produced a meet and school record for WSU senior Jeannette Martus with her winning clearance at 3.97m/13-0 1/4. Karla McGee finished second with a freshman school and Canadian Junior record of 3.85m/12-7 1/2. Also surpassing the previous meet record by Martus of 11-3 3/4, were Stephanie Robinett at 3.70m/12-1 1/2, and Seattle Pacific's Ally Studer at 3.55m/11-7 3/4. Other meet record and winning times included Erin Reed in the 200m dash (23.91), Anna Blue in the 1500m (4:36.93), Randi Smith in the 400m hurdles (59.96), and the 4x100m relay team of Agneta Rosenblad, Reed, Bree Skinner, and Ellannee Richardson (45.38). Idaho's Angela Whyte won the 100m dash with a meet record time of 11.66 seconds. Rosenblad started her day with a rain-splattered long jump win and then went on to lead a WSU one-through-four finish in the 100m hurdles under the blazing sun. WSU's other women with winning efforts included Hilary Smith and Angelita Green going one-two in the 800m, Ryan Gilmore in the 5,000m, Briana Willis in the high jump, and Blessing Ufodiama in the triple jump. The Cougars also won the 4x400m relay. Breaking meet records on the men's side were WSU's Anthony Buchanan with a 21.45 in the 200m dash, Arend Watkin's 13.80 in the 110m hurdles, and Eric Dudley's 51.79 time in the 400m hurdles. Matt Alverson won the high jump with a leap of 2.10m/6-10 3/4, also a meet best mark. Idaho's Joachim Olsen won the shot put with an NCAA AQ and meet record mark of 19.50m/63-11 3/4, just below his best of 20.20m/66-3 1/4, which is second nationally. Fellow Vandal Simon Stewart improved his NCAA PQ with his second-place throw of 18.18m/59-7 3/4. Olsen also won the discus with an NCAA PQ of 56.28m/184-8. Ryan Jensen, Idaho, won the 1500m in a meet record time of 3:57.93 as did the Vandals' 4x100m relay team (40.75). Cougar Ryan Wieseler won the 800m run (1:53.76), and Oscar Franco-Parra won the 5000m, taking 21 seconds off his season best and five seconds off his lifetime best showing the benefit of having former Cougar and 2000 Olympian, Bernard Lagat, be your rabbit. Rick Collins won the pole vault with a height of 4.94m/16-2 1/2, having to come back to the field after a 20-minute rain and lightning delay.
ABOUT THE COUGAR COACHES: Head coach Rick Sloan is in his 28th season with the Cougar track program (seventh year as a head coach, sixth year as mentor to the combined men's and women's program)...Sloan was named USTCA 2001 Men's West Region Coach of the Year and grabbed the MPSF 2001 Men's Coach of the Year...he has also earned the District VIII Coach of the Year in 1998, 1999 and 2000...he is joined by associate coach Debra Lombardi Farwell, assistant coaches Dr. James Li, Mark Macdonald, Kris Grimes, and Francesca Sewell...WSU's volunteer assistant coaches are Dan O'Brien and Bernard Lagat.
