Cougar And Spartan Relays Break 1981 Pool Record
November 14, 1998
PULLMAN, Wash. — Both the Washington State and San Jose State women’s swim
teams erased a 17-year-old Gibb Pool record in the 800-freestyle relay.
The Spartans finished first with a time of 7 minutes, 51.51 seconds, after a
head-to-head battle down the final stretch of the event. The Cougar squad
of Katie Keller, Gretchen Chambers, Julie Thom, and Sarah Ewan were close
behind with a 7:51.82. The previous record of 7:53.17 was set in 1981 by Idaho.
“Both teams needed the relay win and our kids swam four solid times it
just makes us a little bit more hungry,” WSU coach Rocco Aceto said. “We did
an excellent job despite the loss.”
In overall competition, WSU came out victorious with a 112-93 win over SJSU
and keeps its undefeated streak intact against the Spartans with 6-0.
The Cougars claimed six of 11 events at the meet. Senior Katie Keller in
the 50 freestyle (24.05), junior Gretchen Chambers in the 200 freestyle
(1:55.96), junior Kelley Miedema in the 200 IM (2:10.95), senior Anna
Hohmann in the 200 backstroke (2:05.21), and senior Jessica Chisholm in the
200 breaststroke (2:29.30). WSU also took first place honors in the 400
medley relay in a time of 3:57.66.
“This is probably the best meet of the season,” Keller said. “Everyone came
in and took care of the details.”
The Cougars will host rival Washington Friday, Nov. 20 for a 6 p.m.
pre-Apple Cup showdown at Gibb Pool.
