Stanford Sweeps WSU Volleyball
October 2, 1998
STANFORD, Calif. -- The Stanford Cardinal raised their 1997 NCAA
Championship banner, won in Spokane last December, prior to Friday night's
match against Washington State in Maples Pavilion. Then Stanford lowered
the boom on the young and struggling WSU Cougars, winning their eighth
consecutive match 15-2, 15-9, 15-3.
Washington State is now 1-3 in Pac-10, 4-6 overall while Stanford, ranked
seventh nationally and leading the Pac-10 Conference standings, moves to
5-0 in league, 9-2 overall.
With All-American Kerri Walsh serving and Jennifer Detmer and Sara Sandrik
pounding away at the net, Stanford ran off ten consecutive points to take a
14-0 lead in the first game. The Cougars stopped Stanford at game-point
four times and a block by Jennifer Stinson and Joy Sperry gave WSU its
first point of the game. Wendy Rouse served an ace to make it 14-2 only to
serve into the net with the next ball. SU's Sarah Clark blocked Stinson to
give the Cardinal the first game. WSU hit .025 while Stanford pounded a
.379 hitting accuracy.
The second game was more evenly contested as WSU led 6-4 before the
Cardinal, using the middle hitting and blocking of Detmer and Sandrik with
an occasional kill from Cougar Rouse to slow them down, went on to win 15-9.
The third game was more of the same for the Cardinal, running up an 8-2
lead before a Stinson kill gave WSU its last point. Stanford went on score
five straight points and win 15-3.
Detmer led the Cardinal with 13 kills, hit .550 and added eight blocks.
Sandrik tallied 11 kills and eight blocks while Walsh had 10 kills and a
match-high 16 digs. Setter Robin Lewis had a match-high nine blocks in
addition to her 34 assists.
Stinson's 10 kills led WSU while Alicia Erickson tallied four blocks and
setter Samantha Spink had eight digs and 26 assists.
WSU hit only .076 for the match. Stanford hit .366 and out-blocked the
Cougs 16 to 5.
Lucie Vratnickova, a senior from the Czech Republic, was subbed into the
lineup for sophomore Colleen Smith in the middle of the first game and
remained on the right side for the rest of the match. Vratnickova had
career-high seven kills, five digs and two blocks.
