WSU Downs Arizona State In Four Games

PULLMAN, Wash -- Washington State defeated Arizona State 15-8, 7-15, 15-12,
15-6, Sunday, for its first Pac-10 Conference win of the 1998 season before
606 fans at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash.
Washington State is now 3-4 overall, 1-1 in league play while Arizona State
is 4-5 overall, 1-1 in Pac-10 play.
Senior Jennifer Stinson (Davenport, Wash.) led the Cougars with 21 kills,
hitting .372 and adding five blocks. Colleen Smith, a 6-6 sophomore
(Albuquerque, NM) had 12 kills hitting .385 and tallied six blocks. Senior
setter Samantha Spink (Coeur d'Alene, Id.) had 46 assists, seven kills and
six blocks while senior Wendy Rouse (Reno, Nev.) had 11 kills and 12 digs.
Freshman Alicia Erickson (6-4, Henderson, Nev.) contributed a game-high
eight blocks.
ASU was led by the 21 kills of Amanda Burbridge (.200) while setter Jolynn
Faatulu had 46 assists and 18 digs and Laura Hibsman was the Sun Devil
leader with five blocks.
The Cougars hit .203 as a team to ASU's .083 and WSU out-blocked the Sun
Devils 16 to 12.
"The difference in the way we played was night and day from Friday to
Sunday," WSU coach Cindy Fredrick said. "Our attitude was improved, we
were quicker, smoother and we kept the momentum for the whole match."
Washington State travels across the border Tuesday, Sept. 22, for a
non-conference match with the neighboring Idaho Vandals (5-2) and then
travel across the state to take on Washington (1-5, 0-2) Friday, Sept. 25
at 7 p.m.
