Cougar Track & Field Captures Four Event Titles on Busy Day

| By:
SPOKANE, Wash. / AZUSA/LONG BEACH/WALNUT, California – Washington State freshman standout Evans Kurui added to his amazing debut season by finishing with the third-best time in program history in the 5000m while fellow freshman Rosemary Longisa posted the sixth-best 800m time in WSU history to highlight WSU track and field Thursday at the Bryan Clay Invitational.

Cougar Track and Field student-athletes combined for four event wins and 15 personal bests across four events Thursday in California and Washington. In addition to Kurui and Longisa, junior Parker Duskin improved his personal-best time, which remains as the eighth-best mark in program history.

The Cougars were up and down the west coast, competing at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, Calif., while a majority of the team was competing at the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate in Long Beach, Calif. Additionally, WSU sent a contingent of student-athletes to Spokane to compete in the Whitworth Twilight while senior Kevin Limo competed in the 3000m Steeplechase at the Mt. Sac Relays, which he finished third.

On the day, Cougars capturing event victories in Duskin in the 110m Hurdles, Evan Berg in the Javelin, A.J. McGloflin in the Men's High Jump and Nevaeh Wilson in the Women's Discus.

Bryan Clay Invitational
Kurui, making his outdoor 5k debut, left no doubt he is one of the top distance runners in the nation. He finished in 13:16.01, fourth in the elite field. His time is third-best all-time in WSU history, fourth-best in the NCAA this season and the 13th-fastest 5k time in NCAA history. The mark also broke the previous meet record at the Bryan Clay Invitational, set in 2022.

Longisa began her day at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a personal best 800-meter time of 2 minutes and 5.44 seconds. This time was good enough for 13th place, the best of the three Cougs competing. Maya McCabe finished in 24th, only 0.31 seconds off her personal best time.

In the Women's 5000m Invite, sophomore Zenah Cheptoo ran strong, missing her school record time by just five seconds, finishing in 15:45.21. Her school-record time was set a year ago at this same meet. Redshirt-senior Alaina Stone Boggs competed in Heat 3, where she crossed in 16:21.48, finishing 15th.

Pacific Coast Intercollegiate
Duskin won his fifth event of the outdoor season with another 110-meter hurdles victory, finishing with a time of 13.69 seconds. This time was a personal-best for the junior and the eight-fastest time in WSU history.

Berg smashed his pervious personal best javelin throw distance, winning the event for the first time this season. His winning throw of 67.89 meters was more than 3 meters further than the second-place finisher. He needed no more than his first attempt to destroy his personal record by 8 meters.

In the Women's 100-meter, sophomore Brooke Lyons finished in fourth with a time of 11.70 seconds. Freshman Zoe Ray set a personal-best time of 12.06 seconds in the event, finishing in 22nd.

Junior Mason Lawyer continued on his successful outdoor season with a second-place finish in the Men's 100m. His time of 10.22 seconds was wind-aided or would have placed him among the Top 10 in program history. Bryson Stubblefield also impressed, finishing 12th with a time of 10.52 seconds.

Kai Twaddle-Dunham added another Discus podium to his season, finishing third with a throw of 57 meters. Maxwell Moore also impressed, finishing fifth, only 0.9 meters off his teammate's throw.

Whitworth Twilight
At the Whitworth Twilight, sophomore Wilson and junior McGloflin were victorious on the day. Wilson posted a season-best mark of 46.73m (153' 3") in the discus, winning by more than two feet. McGloflin passed until 2.01m, which he cleared on his first attempt, the only person in the field to do so. He then pushed the bar up 2.75 inches but failed to clear on his three tries.
