Cougars Comeback for 7-6 Win at Gonzaga in 10 Innings

SPOKANE, Wash. (April 1, 2025) – Ricco Longo delivered a two-run single in the tenth inning as Washington State beat Gonzaga 7-6 Tuesday evening.

WSU erased a 5-0 first-inning deficit with two runs in the third, one in the fourth, one in the sixth and tied the game in in the eighth before the Spokane native Longo delivered the game-winner. The Cougars used 10 pitchers and only allowed five runs in the first and one in the tenth as Rylan Haider worked the final two innings for the win.

Gavin Roy had two hits, drove in two and homered while Max Hartman and Kyler Northrop each collected two hits.

KEY MOMENTS OF THE GAME
Gonzaga used seven hits to score five runs in the opening frame before the Cougars answered a with a pair of runs in the third inning. Northrop lined a two-out double off the left field wall and scored on a two-out opposite-field RBI-single to left field by Hartman before Obenour lined a double down the left field line to score Hartman and made it a 5-2 game.

Roy made it a two-run game with a no-doubt solo homer to left field with two outs in the fourth. The Cougars put runners on first and second with one out in the fifth but GU ended the threat with a 4-6-3 ground ball double play.

In the sixth, Skjonsby led off the inning with a double to right-centerfield and two batters later, after fouling a pitch off his hand, Roy beat out an infield-single to shortstop to score Skojonsby and make it a one-run game.

In the eighth, Johnstone beat out an infield single to third base to start the inning, was bunted to second and scored on Cresswell's RBI-single up the middle to tie the game. GU put runners on the corners with two outs in the eighth and Cougars called up Friday starter Griffin Smith who ended the threat with a groundball comebacker.

In the ninth, GU doubled to left-centerfield with one out but Rylan Haider ended the threat with a strikeout and groundball comebacker.

In the tenth, Skjonsby and Johnstone were both hit by the pitch to start the inning and both moved up a base after a Cresswell groundout. Roy was intentionally walked to load the bases before Longo pulled a 2-1 pitch over a leaping Gonzaga third baseman and into left field to score two. GU led off the tenth with a solo homer to right field but Haider retired the next hitters on groundouts and worked around a two-single to seal up the 7-6 win.
