Mason Lawyer Breaks 34-Year-Old Record in Winning 200m Dash

SEATTLE, Wash. / ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Junior Mason Lawyer's time of 20.78 seconds in the 200m dash broke a 34-year-old program record, while WSU captured five other events to highlight Friday's action at the UW Invite in Seattle and New Mexico Team Open in Albuquerque, N.M.

NEW MEXICO TEAM OPEN
Lawyer blazed to victory in New Mexico by posting a .18-second victory over the next fastest time. The 20.78 mark eclipsed George Ogbeide's previous record of 20.86 second set during the 1991 indoor season. The time also shattered Lawyer's previous best of 21.13 seconds, set in Fayetteville, Ark., during the 2023 season.

Brooke Lyons (24.06), Zoe Ray (24.45), and Lahela Ray (24.73) each set personal-best times in the unseeded Women's 200-meter dash. They finished in fourth, eighth, and 16th, respectively.

To wrap up the afternoon in Albuquerque, Ethan Willems won the Men's 400-meter dash with a personal-best time of 46.51 seconds. Willems now holds the third-best 400 meter time in WSU indoor history. Royal Haley also competed in the event in which he finished 12th with a personal-best time of 48.12 seconds.

Every athlete that competed at the New Mexico Team Open Friday set a personal-best time.

UW INVITE
At the UW Invite, the Cougars captured four event wins as Evans Kurui, Eli Lawrence, Micaela De Mello and A.J. McGloflin each continued strong starts to their indoor seasons.

Kurui took home the victory in the Men's 3000-meter race, finishing at 7:48.44, four seconds better than the second place finisher. This is Kurui's first win in just his third indoor meet and narrowly missed eclipsing Track and Field legend Henry Rono's WSU freshman record of 7:47.4 set in 1977. Kurui now ranks third overall in WSU history in this event. Josphat Meli also competed and finished in 20th with a personal-best time of 8:05.49.

In the Men's High Jump, sophomore A.J. McGloflin won with a height of 2.14 meters (7' 0¼"). The height was a personal-best for McGloflin as he was the only jumper to clear seven feet. Antoni Smith also set a personal best of 2.04m (6' 8¼"), which earned him third place.

Brazil native Micaela De Mello won the 60-meter hurdles final with a time of 8.16 seconds, outrunning her opponents by half a second. This was after she finished first in the preliminary race earlier in the day.

The Cougs also won the Men's Triple Jump as sophomore Eli Lawrence jumped a distance of 15.66 meters (51' 4½") to take home the crown. The distance was also a personal best for Lawrence in his third triple jump win of the year. Lawrence now ranks seventh overall in WSU history, moving up one place from his previous spot.

Up Next:
The Cougs will continue their split triple-header weekend tomorrow with more athletes competing in Spokane, Seattle, and Albuquerque.
