One Win and Three Second-Place Finishes Highlight Rowing's 2024 Spring Opener

| By:
LOWELL, Ore. (March 23, 2024) – The Washington State women's rowing team picked up one victory and three second place finishes as it started the 2024 Spring season against Oregon State and Miami at Dexter Lake.

"Overall it was a solid start to the season," said Head Coach Jane LaRiviere. "The racing was fairly tight and that allowed us to see how we operate under pressure. Good to get the win in the one and 2V8 over Miami and Congrats to the 3V8 for their decisive win."

In the first race of the morning, the Cougs second  varsity four boat finished second with a time of 7:47.85. WSU got off to a quick start over the three Oregon State boats but ultimately fell nine seconds short to Oregon State's second varsity four boat. Oregon State's third varsity four boat finished with a time of 8:08.77 and their fourth varsity four boat crossed in a time of 9:16.82.

In the closest race of the day, with first and last only separated by six seconds, Washington State's first varsity four boat finished third with a time of 7:36.89, just behind Miami (7:30.6) and Oregon State (7:34.06).

The last race of the day was the novice varsity eight where the Cougs took their first and only victory of the day with a time of 7:17.7. Oregon State, the only other boat in the race, finished with a time of 7:40.74.

Washington State's second varsity eight crew collected a second-place victory. The Coug women, with a time of 6:44.48, were close behind Oregon State (6:38.58) and just ahead of Miami (6:59.56). While the Cougs were in the middle of the pack for most of the race, their push toward the end almost put them in first, but they ultimately fell just short.

WSU's first varsity eight secured another second-place finish in the most anticipated race of the day with a time of 6:29.24. The Cougs' second-place finish was only 0.64 seconds behind first-place Oregon State (6:28.6) and six seconds clear of Miami (6:35.5). Washington State and OSU battled the entire race, and needed a photo finish to determine a winner.

The Cougs will compete next at the San Diego Crew Classic, April 5-7, at Mission Bay in San Diego, California.
