PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University Director of Athletics Pat Chun announced Friday that
Korey Schroeder has been named the Cougars Head Volleyball Coach. Schroeder becomes the 13th head coach in modern program history.
"We are excited to name Korey as our head volleyball coach," said Chun. "Korey brings a new energy and passion for WSU Volleyball. It was clear throughout this year he had earned the respect of our team and was a key component in the overall success of this past season. We look forward to watching Korey lead and build our volleyball program."
This past season, Schroeder served as the Cougars' assistant coach, having a hand in one of the best years in program history. The Cougars went 26-8, reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA Championship, posted seven Top-25 wins, and reached a ranking of No. 4 before concluding the season ranked No. 11 nationally.
"I am humbled and grateful for the opportunity to lead Washington State Volleyball into the next chapter of the program's storied history," said Schroeder. "Thank you to Pat Chun and [Deputy Director of Athletics/SWA] Anne McCoy for giving me their confidence and supporting me throughout this process. In my first year at Washington State, the energy I have felt from the Pullman community, Cougar fans, and the individuals within the Washington State Athletic Department has been phenomenal. They are all reasons why Pullman feels like home, and it is the same reason our student-athletes love their experience at Washington State. We have a group of high-character players returning next season and I am excited to build on the foundation we will create together this spring."
During the 2023 season, in addition to coaching, Schroeder organized recruiting databases and created recruiting content, ran statistical analyses of WSU and future opponents to maximize match planning, and implemented the use of NeuroFuel for improved mental performance during practice and competitions.
Schroeder joined the Washington State women's volleyball staff as an assistant coach in the spring of 2023. He made the move to the Palouse after being a part of three 20-win seasons over the previous five years as the women's volleyball associate head coach/ recruiting coordinator at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay.
Schroeder's time in Green Bay began with a Horizon League Championship in 2018 and the ensuing automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, the program's first tournament appearance since 2003. His five-year stint with the Phoenix culminated in 2022 with the program's highest win total (23) since 2003.
In each of his nine semesters coaching at UWGB, the Phoenix achieved a team GPA of 3.60 or higher, winning the AVCA Team Academic award each of his five seasons on campus.
With his assistance during the 2018 season, Taylor Wolf was named Horizon League Player of the Year, Maddie Yoss was named Setter of the Year and Vanessa Buman was named Defensive Player of the Year. Alexandra Zakutney was also named to the All-Freshman Team, while Yoss and Austyn Everingham landed on the All-Academic Team.
Prior to arriving at Green Bay, Schroeder helped UW-Platteville get off to its best start in program history (7-0) before the team finished above .500 on the year for the first time since 2012.
Schroeder began his coaching career as the assistant coach at WIAA power Newman Catholic High School in Wausau, Wis. In his two seasons at Newman, Schroeder helped the team capture the WIAA State Championship in both 2015 and 2016. He helped coach a pair of All-State players and assisted the team to a 74-8 record in his two seasons on the sidelines.
A native of Kaukauna, Wis., Schroeder spent two seasons leading the Wisconsin ICE Volleyball Club, both as head coach at the 16's level and assistant with the 18's level. He also served as the assistant coach for the 18's with the Wisconsin ICE.
Schroeder was an All-State high school selection in 2009 for Kaukauna High School and played club volleyball during his time at UW-Platteville, where he was once named to the NCVF All-Tournament Team. He also served two seasons as a student assistant at UWP.
