PULLMAN, Wash. (Hayden Wysup) --Â Jaylen Wells had 17 points and 10 rebounds, his first double-double in Pac-12 play, and Isaac Jones added 13 points and 11 rebounds, as WSU beat Colorado 78-69, Saturday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum in Pullman, Wash. The double-double marked Wells' second of the year and continues a streak of eight-consecutive double-digit scoring performances. The last time WSU faced CU, Wells only recorded nine minutes and nearly a month later he played 37 minutes. Â
"Jaylen keeps growing - he's a tremendous three-level scorer," WSU Head Coach Kyle Smith said of Wells' development after the win. "He can make threes, he's a great midrange shooter, he can get to the cup, and he can draw some fouls."Â
Myles Rice had a relatively quiet scoring performance in the first meeting at Boulder. Today, Rice had 17 points with 12 points in the second half. Several of Rice's baskets came in pivotal moments late in the game. Â
"We have 100% confidence in him," Jones said of Rice postgame, expressing the confidence the team has in him late in games. "The kid [Rice] is fast. He can get to the basket whenever. I feel great when the balls is in his hands in situations like that."Â
Issac Jones had 13 points on 50% shooting from the field and 11 rebounds for his seventh double-double as a Coug.Â
KJ Simpson led the game in scoring with 25 points. In the first meeting with the Buffs, Dec. 31, Simpson had 34 points, finding his shot against in Pullman with the first basket of the game. The Cougars responded quickly, getting to from 3-point range. In the opening minutes, both Wells and Jakimovski made 3-pointers to fuel a 9-0 run and give Wazzu an early 10-4 lead, which the Cougars never conceded.Â
Washington State held the Buffaloes to just 27% shooting in the first 10 minutes of the first half and held Colorado below 40% in the game. Despite the Cougs leading most of the half, they could not gain any sizable lead as both teams struggled shooting the ball with seven combined points in the paint.Â
Washington State ended the half with a 36-30 lead. Jakimovski led the half, scoring all 11 of his points in the opening stanza, nailing three 3-pointers and grabbing five rebounds. Wells added seven points with a pair of 3-pointers and grabbing 6 rebounds. Simpson led the Buffaloes in scoring with 10 points. The Cougars entered the half with a six-point lead, larger than their lead at any point in the first contest.Â
The Cougars started the second half looking to extend their lead, and with 16:32 left to play Rueben Chinyelu met Cody Williams at the rim to reject a dunk and in transition Jones slammed it home to give the Cougars a 42-32 lead. The Cougars kept their foot on the gas pedal, and with 13:18 Jones sized up Eddie Lampkin and got to the rim for the finish, giving Wazzu a 12-point lead. However, the Buffaloes fought right back and after back-to-back 3-pointers, the Buffs were within six again. Â
As the game reached its finale, Colorado kept fighting, and with 3:29 left to play Simpson nailed a 3-pointer to pull Colorado within three. While only leading by a single possession with one minute remaining, Rice got to the rim to put Washington State up five. With a Colorado comeback looking increasingly unlikely, Jones got to the rim for an and-one, sealing the Washington State win. Rice and Jones combined for 15 points in the final six minutes for the Cougars' offense. Â
Washington State won 78-69 and improved to 15-6 and 10-1 at home. The Cougars travel to Seattle next Saturday to take on Washington in the Boeing Apple Cup Series.
