WSU MBB Season Concludes with Loss to Portland
March 06, 2026 | Men's Basketball
LAS VEGAS – Washington State men's basketball's 2025-26 season concluded Friday with a 74-68 loss to the Portland Pilots in the second round of the West Coast Conference Championships. WSU true freshman Ace Glass broke three WSU freshman season records, but the Cougars were unable to hold on to a four-point halftime lead as Portland pulled away for a 74-68 victory at Orleans Arena in Las Vegas.
Glass finished with a game-high 19 points – his 27th double-digit performance of the season – to close out a historic rookie season. He surpassed Myles Rice's single-season WSU freshman scoring record, finishing with 525 points on the season. He also eclipsed Klay Thompson's freshman mark of 68 three-pointers, finishing with 71 for the year, and set a WSU freshman free throw percentage record at 88.2 percent (90-of-102).
Washington State led 29-25 at halftime but was outscored 49-39 in the second half as Portland snapped a 10-game losing streak against the Cougs and avenged the two-game regular-season sweep from Wazzu.
The Cougars countered Portland's initial run out of the locker room, holding the lead for the first five minutes before the Pilots went on a decisive run midway through the second half to claim the lead with 14 minutes remaining. Jerone Morton, ND Okafor, and Eemeli Yalaho all complemented Glass with double-figure games. Okafor and Yalaho shared the rebounding with six boards each.
WSU recorded its second-most assists this season with 21 assists on 25 made baskets. Glass connected on 4-of-10 from 3-point range and added five assists alongside Morton. WSU's 21 assists were a team strength, and the Cougars generated 16 points off turnovers compared to just four for Portland. The Cougs also held an edge in fast-break points, 12-10.
The loss ends the Cougars' season at 12-20 and Coach David Riley's second season at WSU. The Cougs concluded the season with the seventh-largest point total in 125 seasons. Wazzu made 303 total 3-pointers this season, fourth most in program history.
