PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 15 Washington State women's soccer team (6-1-0) defeated the Kansas Jayhawks (3-1-4), 1-0, Sunday afternoon at Lower Soccer Field, thanks to a 40th minute goal from WSU junior
Rajanah Reed. The Cougars rebounded from a Thursday evening loss with their second shutout of the season, as redshirt-junior
Musuai Isaia made her first-career start in goal.
WSU controlled the tempo throughout Sunday's match, connecting passes through the midfield and finding several opportunities on goal. In total, the Cougars finished with 21 shots, including seven on target, while generating nine corner kicks.
Reed scored the game-winning goal late in the first half, when she controlled possession along the left touchline in the attacking third. The Arizona native got aggressive, dribbling at her defender and getting past her with a series of stepovers to create space. Reed glanced up and put a lofty ball in from the left edge of the box. The ball arched over the Kansas goalkeeper before dipping into the upper far corner.
Both of Reed's two goals this season have proved the game-winner, after netting her first career goal against San Diego State.
The Cougars started early, as junior
Khalia Gathright registered a shot in the opening minute and senior
Margie Detrizio followed minutes later with the first opportunity on goal. In total, the Cougs took 12 first-half shots and had seven corner kick opportunities around Reed's goal.
Isaia tallied her first cleansheet and win, playing the full 90 between the pipes. The Hawaiian native was called upon twice for saves. The Jayhawks nearly found the opening goal with their first shot in the 11th minute. KU's Lexi Watts beat Isaia at the far post, but junior
Reese Tappan tracked back and made the goal-line save.
The Cougars continue an 8-game homestand next Thursday, Sept. 14. Wazzu will host Seattle U at 7 p.m. for "Swifties at the Pitch" Night with television coverage on Pac-12 Network.
