Cougs Close Nonconference with 2-1 Win over Seattle

PULLMAN, Wash. – The No. 24 Washington State women's soccer team (7-1-0) defeated the Seattle U Redhawks, 2-1, Thursday evening at Lower Soccer Field, to conclude nonconference regular season play. WSU seniors Margie Detrizio and Bridget Rieken each scored first-half goals with their head to give the Cougars the lead and the win.

Washington State controlled the game for much of the night, with just over half the possession, the majority of which came in the attacking half of the field. Margie Detrizio found the space she needed in the 29th minute on a corner kick. WSU's Reagan Kotschau served the corner kick, a well-weighted ball into the area. Detrizio met the ball in the air, redirecting it up and over the Seattle goalkeeper and back under the crossbar.

The goal was Detrizio's third of the year and Kotschau's second assist. With the goal, Detrizio moved into a tie for eighth in school history with her 21st goal, and up to ninth on career points (56).

The Cougars, who create nearly nine corner kick opportunities per game, finished the match with 10 corner kicks and have scored three goals this year from the flag.

With Seattle U on its heels, Wazzu pressed forward, finding space to connect passes up the flanks to serve dangerous balls into the area. In the 39th minute, junior Rajanah Reed collected a miscleared ball and sent a cross in from the left touchline. Rieken met the ball at the top of the 6-yard box and finished at the far post.

Rieken, a fifth-year senior, has scored three goals this season, all with her head. The goal with the Coeur d'Alene native's ninth-career goal, and proved to be the game-winner against the Redhawks.

Returning from the locker room, WSU continued to dominate the game. Seattle found its goal from the penalty spot in the 74th minute. A Redhawk attacker looked to cut along the endline inside the box, but was taken down and the center official pointed to the spot. SU's Kait Raffensperger stepped up and finished to bring the game within one.

WSU closed out the game with similar possession control and cohesive play through the midfield, limiting the Redhawks to just four shots with three on target. Wazzu concludes the nonconference season with its best record since 2019 when it began Pac-12 play with a 7-1 record.

The Cougars return to the pitch next Friday, Sept. 22, in the Pac-12 Conference season opener. WSU hosts No. 3 Stanford at Lower Soccer Field for Flashback Friday at 7 p.m. with the game streamed live by Washington State.
