LAS VEGAS – The Washington State women's golf team concluded its second tournament of the spring Tuesday, Feb. 21, as the Cougars wrapped up their stay at The Show in Las Vegas in 15th place on the team leaderboard.
WSU had a pair of golfers post a top-60 finish at The Show. Freshman Emiko Sverduk finished in a tie for 59th at the tournament, carding a team-best 12-over 228 over three rounds of play at Spanish Trail Country Club. Meanwhile, sophomore Madelyn Gamble ended The Show in a tie for 60th, as she was one stroke behind Sverduk at 13-over 229. Gamble paced the Cougars through Tuesday's third round at The Show, as the Pleasant Hill, California native carded 2-over 74 to move up 13 slots on the player leaderboard in her final round of play.
Washington State finished The Show in 15th place, as the Cougars posted rounds of 302-303-312 to end the tournament at 53-over 917.
"This was not a good week for the Cougs in Vegas. We struggled with approach shots, hitting off the dormant and sandy Bermuda fairways, and didn't adjust well to the green speed throughout the rounds we played," said Washington State Women's Golf Head Coach Sofie Aagaard. "The course was in good shape and gave lots of roll on the tee ball as well as having smooth rolling greens. We didn't fully take advantage of this as our wedge game wasn't consistent or good enough distance control to get us close to pins."
No. 6-ranked Mississippi State won the team title at The Show, as the Bulldogs carded 9-under 855 to post a two-stroke victory over No. 30 Pepperdine. New Mexico's Myah McDonald captured the tournament's individual title after shooting 9-under 207 over her three rounds of play at Spanish Trail Country Club.
Washington State will take a week away from competition before jumping back into action March 6-7 for the Juli Inkster Meadow Club Invitational. The tournament will take place in Fairfax, California at the Meadow Club Golf Course.
"As always, we learn from our rounds of competition to get one day better every day and will take the good with us as well as look into the things that didn't work and make improvements for better performances as a team through the spring," said Aagaard. "We had good scoring from our two freshmen the first day of the tournament, which is always encouraging, but it's unfortunate we didn't all click at the same time."
