Detrizio Spurs Comeback Win in Tucson, Kotschau Capitalizes

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Washington State women's soccer team (8-4, 1-3) defeated the Arizona Wildcats (4-5-3, 1-3), 2-1, Thursday night in Tucson, Ariz. WSU came back from a first-half deficit, spurred by a goal from senior Margie Detrizio in the 55th minute, as freshman Reagan Kotschau netted the game-winner from the penalty spot in the final 10 minutes. The Cougars picked up their first Pac-12 win of the season and remained undefeated on the road with the victory.

WSU found itself trailing just before the halftime whistle when the Wildcats played a free kick into the Cougars' defensive area. WSU's backline fended off the initial service, but Arizona jumped on the ball, recycling it back into the area. The Wildcats made a give-and-go at the top of the box and Nicole Dallin finished for the opening goal.

The Cougars returned from the locker room, looking to better control the midfield and limit Arizona's room to work with. WSU's chance came less than 10 minutes into the second period, as Reese Tappan lofted a ball down the right flank for a sprinting Megan Santa Cruz. The freshman ran onto the ball, beating a defender to create space for service on the endline. Detrizio met the low, driven ball just outside the goal and punched the equalizer into the net, and provided Santa Cruz with her first career assist.
Detrizio, returning to her home state of Arizona, notched her team-best fifth goal of the season, and her 23rd career goal. The finish brought her to 60 career points, seventh in program history, and tied for seventh in career goals scored.

With the score level, the match settled into a box-to-box battle with limited quality opportunities in the attacking area. The Cougars clinched the win in the 86th minute when fifth-year senior Brianna McReynold drew a penalty on a challenge from behind in the box.

Cougar freshman Reagan Kotschau stepped to the spot and calmly finished the game-winning goal, her second of the season. The penalty was WSU's second of the season after Grayson Lynch finished from the spot in the Cougars' win at Texas A&M in August.

WSU's backline fended off a late Arizona push, limiting the Wildcats to just one shot after taking the lead. Nadia Cooper earned her 25th career win and made three saves in the match. Keeley Copper became the first Cougar to eclipse 1,000 minutes played in 2023.

Washington State returns to the pitch Sunday, Oct. 8, in Tempe, Ariz., against the Sun Devils. Kickoff against Arizona State is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT live on Pac-12 Arizona.
