Reed Nets Late Equalizer for 1-1 Draw at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Washington State women's soccer team (8-5-1, 1-4-1) tied to the California Golden Bears (5-3-7, 2-0-5), 1-1, Friday afternoon in Berkeley, Calif. WSU junior Rajanah Reed scored the Cougars' goal in the 88th minute to draw level with California and clinch a road result.

Cal scored its goal early in the 6th minute on a well-weighted throughball from the Bears' midfield to Karlie Lema, making a run into the area. WSU's goalkeeper Nadia Cooper came off her line to close down the opportunity, but Lema took the touch to avoid the challenge and finish for the opening goal.

With the Cougs trailing early, they hunted the equalizer for the majority of the contest. Bridget Rieken and Reese Tappan controlled the backline, preventing any further opportunities. The Bears nearly got a second goal from a corner kick in the 29th minute, but a goal-line save from a strong right hand by Nadia Cooper kept the net empty.

Returning from intermission, the Cougars dominated possession and offensive opportunities, firing four shots in the opening quarter of the second half, and limiting California without a shot. The Bears managed to regain more control of the game, but WSU continued to press forward for opportunities.

The Cougars got their equalizer with less than three minutes to play off of a recycled shot from Margie Detrizio. Bri McReynolds played the ball into the area, Detrizio did not get the ball cleanly, but Reed jumped on the loose ball and laid it off to Lindsey Turner for a strike. With lots of bodies in the way, the shot ricocheted off Detrizio and back to Reed for the left-footed finish.

The result was Washington State's first tie of the season. The Cougars return to Lower Soccer Field, Thursday, Oct. 19 for the annual Pink Game recognizing breast cancer awareness and research. WSU will host Colorado in its penultimate home game with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m. PT on Pac-12 Networks.
