PULLMAN, Wash. – The Washington State women's soccer team (9-5-1, 2-4-1) defeated the Colorado Buffaloes (10-4-2, 2-3-2, 1-0, Thursday evening at Lower Soccer Field. WSU senior
Margie Detrizio scored the match's lone goal in the 23rd minute to give WSU its second Pac-12 win and fifth-straight game unbeaten by Colorado.
The Cougars' goal came midway through the first half after a Colorado free kick. The Buffs played the set piece to the top of the box where junior
Reese Tappan cleared the ball towards midfield. Detrizio pounced on Tappan's loose clearance, shedding her defender on the turn, before dribbling to the top of the penalty box. The senior lined up a right-footed shot and finished low and hard at the near post for her team-high seventh goal of the season.
Tappan was credited with her third assist of the year and fourth career assist. Detrizio goal marked the 25th of her career, moving one goal shy of Elyse Bennett at sixth in Cougar scoring history.
Wazzu continued to defend aerial through balls over the top, disrupting play through the midfield to prevent any buildup from Colorado. Late in the first half, Detrizio had a chance at a second goal, getting her boot around the ball in the 37th minute, but the attempt was blocked by the CU backline.
Returning from the break, WSU controlled the flow of the game, breaking up passing lanes and handling aerial challenges. The Cougar midfield struggled to connect with the attacking line early in the second stanza, before freshmen
Megan Santa Cruz and
Reagan Kotschau found space to dribble at defenders.
Santa Cruz best chance of the game came in the 51st minute when she held off a defender on her hip before pulling a shot from the top of the penalty area. The shot beat the keeper with pace but ricocheted off the far post and just wide.
WSU had two additional looks in the final quarter of the match when Santa Cruz fired off a blocked shot. Minutes later, senior
Brianna McReynolds had a look at the top of the penalty area, fizzing the ball just wide of the far post.
Junior goalkeeper
Nadia Cooper earned her second cleansheet of the season and 14th in her career with three saves in the match.
The Cougars conclude their 2023 regular season home schedule Sunday, Oct. 22, hosting Utah for Senior Day at 1 p.m. from Lower Soccer Field. The match will be streamed live by Washington State after a pre-game recognition of the senior class.
