WEEK PREVIEW
>> WSU continues Pac-12 play this week, traveling to Los Angeles to take on both UCLA and USC. The Cougars will take on the Bruins first, Friday, Oct. 4 with first serve set at 6 p.m. from Paluey Pavilion. Washington State is currently on a three-game win streak against UCLA, which includes a sweep of the Bruins from a season ago.
>> Match number two for the Cougars this week will see WSU head over to the Galen Center while at Los Angeles to face the Trojans of Southern California. USC is currently receiving votes in the week five AVCA Coaches Poll, and Washington State will be looking to pick up a win Sunday, Oct. 6 against the Trojans, with the last occurring in 1998 on the home court of USC.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
The Cougars return to the top 25 heading into week five, ranked at No. 24 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Coaches Poll with 164 points. The RichKern Poll sees WSU up to No. 23 overall , and the Pablo Rankings have Washington State currently ranked No. 12 heading into the second week of Pac-12 action.
APPLE CUP UPSET
The Cougars defeated arch rival No. 8 Washington last week, inside Bohler Gym to give WSU its' first winning streak at home against UW since 2000-01. Set scores from the match were: 22-25, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-20 in favor of WSU.
Pia Timmer posted a team-high in kills with 14 on the night, adding two blocks and seven digs to her stat line.
Hannah Pukis added a match-high 41 assists in the upset victory, and posted career-high in kills with six total. Pukis recorded her third double-double of her career as well with 10 digs.
Alexcis Lusby and
Magda Jehlarova added some offensive fire power for the Cougars during the evening with 10 kills each. Magda went on to lead WSU in blocks as well with six total.
LAST TIME OUT
Washington State volleyball went five sets on the road with the No. 21 ranked California Golden Bears, but unfortunately was downed 3-2 Saturday afternoon. Set scores from the match were: 23-25, 25-22, 19-25, 25-18, and 4-15 in favor of Cal (11-1, 1-1 Pac-12).
Jocelyn Urias tied her career-high in kills during this contest, leading the Cougars with 18 total on the day. Urias also posted five blocks, and a hitting percentage of .405 as well.
Magda Jehlarova continued to turn in solid blocking performances as she totaled six in the match, and provided five kills as well.
